BBC4, a comparatively new TV channel, has a character of its own. From the start it aimed to be “a place to think”, and it was always designed as something “that the commercial market would never do”, says Roly Keating, its controller and formerly head of arts at the BBC. Its first week’s schedule indeed verged on a parody of non-commercial TV, with township opera from South Africa and a performance by a Senegalese singer in a London church hall. A top-rated show will typically draw some 50,000 viewers – almost negligible in television terms. Yet that narrow appeal makes BBC4 a model of what a publicly financed broadcaster ought to do. It has roamed into territory where its ratings-driven sister channel, BBC1, seldom dares to tread. Despite a tiny 35m budget, it boasts an intelligent prime-time talk show and a world news programme so internationally minded that its London provenance is barely visible. BBC4 may wear its gravity a little too heavily at times, but it supplies a variety and thoughtfulness unavailable on prime time BBC1. The more the other BBC channels chase the ratings, and the more that BBC4 refuses to be dictated to by them, the more the channel looks like a model for what BBC television could look like.
It is clear from the passage that, since BBC4 is publicly financed, it ----.
A) has to give viewers the kind of programmes they want
B) has a large budget with which to work
C) is under no pressure to attract large numbers of viewers
D) is under an obligation to offer a great variety of programme

In 1764, there was a serious quarrel over taxation between the British government and its colonies in
America. The British government continued to think
of the colonists as British subjects. In 1700, there had
been only 200.000 colonists, but by 1770 this number
rose to 2.5 million. Obviously, such large numbers
needed to be dealt with carefully. Some American
colonists decided that it was not lawful for the British
government to tax them without their agreement.
Political opinion in Britain was divided. Some felt that
the tax was fair because the money would be used to
pay for the defence of the American colonies against
French attack. But several important politicians
agreed with the colonists that there should be “no
taxation without representation”. Hence, in 1773, at
the port of Boston, a group of colonists threw a
shipload of tea into the sea rather than pay tax on it.
The event became known as “the Boston Tea Party”.
The British government responded by closing the
port. But the colonists then decided to prevent British
goods from entering America until the port was
opened again. The colonists’ action was regarded as
a rebellion, and the British government decided to
defeat it by force. Thus, the American War of
Independence got underway. The war lasted from
1775 until 1783. The British government had no
respect for the colonists’ fighting ability. The result
was a disastrous defeat for the British forces. At the
end of the war, Britain lost all the American colonies
except Canada.
It is stated in the passage that, within a period of almost three quarters of a century, ----.

Peeling back both space and time, scientists using the Hubble Space Telescope have found that the strange force known as dark energy appears to have existed for at least the past two-thirds of the universe's history. Dark energy is a mysterious repulsive force that opposes gravity, causing the universe to expand. Albert Einstein posited that a form of the force existed nearly a century ago by, but it was not discovered until 1998. Scientists believe dark energy makes up about 70 percent of the substance of the universe. Also, scientists can measure the strength of dark energy by looking at distant galaxies for a type of exploding star known as a Type 1A supernova.

Hepatitis A is an enterovirus transmitted by the orofecal route, such as contaminated food. It causes an acute form of hepatitis (inflammation of the liver), does not have a chronic stage, and will not cause any permanent damage to the liver. The patient's immune system makes antibodies against Hepatitis A that confer immunity against future infection. A vaccine is available that will prevent infection from hepatitis A for life. Young children who catch hepatitis A often have a milder form of the disease, usually lasting from 1-3 weeks, whereas adults tend to experience a much more severe form of the disease. They are often confined to bed and minimal activity for about 4 weeks and have to stop their work for from one to three months or longer. Many adults take up to 6-12 months and occasionally longer to recover entirely. Symptoms that may be experienced after the first month or two are low immunity: It is much easier to catch minor infections and for these infections to linger longer than they normally would. Many people experience a slow but sure improvement, over this later period. They are generally able to function fairly normally, still needing more sleep and reduced athletic activity. It is common for recovering patients to experience occasional 'off' days, during which they need to rest more. There is no specific treatment for Hepatitis A. Sufferers are advised to rest, avoid fatty foods and alcohol (these may be poorly tolerated for some additional months during the recovery phase and cause minor relapses), eat a well-balanced diet, and stay hydrated.
According to the passage, a patient recovering from Hepatitis A should ...............
A) do physical exercise every day
B) be kept in quarantine
C) drink as much water as he/she can
D) have fast food and a little wine
E) eat only vegetables and fruit

The Marshall Plan was not a simple program for transferring massive sums of money to struggling countries, but an explicit – and eventually successful – attempt to reindustrialize Europe.” say Erik Reinert and Ha-Joon Chang. It follows that if Africa really wants economic prosperity, it should study and draw valuable lessons from the Marshall Plan’s dark twin: the Morgenthau Plan implemented in Germany in 1945. Reinert tells the story best: When it was clear that the Allies would win the Second World War, the question of what to do with Germany, which in three decades had precipitated two World Wars, reared its head. Henry Morgenthau Jr, the US secretary of the treasury, formulated a plan to keep Germany from ever again threatening world peace. Germany, he argued, had to be entirely deindustrialized and turned into an agricultural nation. All industrial equipment was to be destroyed, and the mines were to be flooded. This program was approved by the Allies and was immediately implemented when Germany capitulated in 1945. However, it soon became clear that the Morgenthau Plan was causing serious economic problems in Germany: deindustrialization caused agricultural productivity to plummet. This was indeed an interesting experiment. The mechanisms of synergy between industry and agriculture worked in reverse: killing the industry reduced the productivity of the agricultural sector.

East Germans registered their discontent with
worsening conditions by massive illegal emigration to
the West. This exodus together with evidence of
widespread official corruption led to the resignation of
Honecker. His successor, Egon Krenz, promised
reforms, but he was nevertheless faced with
continuing protests and continuing mass emigration.
In the end, on 4 November 1989, the government, in
a move that acknowledged its powerlessness to hold
its citizens captive, opened its border with
Germans to travel to the West. In a matter of days,
the Berlin Wall, which had been the embodiment of
the Cold War, the Iron Curtain, and the division of
East from West, was demolished by groups of
ordinary citizens. Jubilant crowds from both sides
walked through the gaping holes that now permitted
men, women, and children to take the few steps that

national unity.

People who are into body building have one goal in mind – to become the biggest, most muscular people in the world. To accomplish this, they will do almost anything to gain muscle. For most, this means hours of grind and toil at the gym. Given time and effort, these dedicated individuals become champions who gain the respect and envy of an admiring world. Unfortunately, there are those who want instant results and are willing to do anything to shortcut the time-honoured process. Many people are tempted to use steroids, because they promise quick muscle gain. While taking large doses of these magical potions, you can actually see your gains come almost daily – and this is how you get hooked. After a few weeks of incredible gain, you now try to give up steroids, but soon start to see your muscle gain fade away. After a few weeks, you go back to the bottle to regain your beloved muscle mass. This is the first sign that the steroids are affecting your mind. They tell you that you can’t be without them, and that if you take more you can get even bigger. As doses increase, you become a different person, both physically and mentally. You probably won’t even notice that you are going through what has been called the ‘roid rage’ since you will be too occupied with building up mass. But others will see, even experience, your personality changes. Roid rages were previously thought to be an outward sign of the extreme joy associated with dynamic muscle growth. It now seems that heavy use of these steroids can seriously affect mood and personality.
54.We understand from the passage that aggression ................
